Ergathon

2011 Ergathon This Weekend!

Let the rowing begin. On land, that is! The Berkeley High Crew Team's annual ergathon is days away with the event happening this Saturday, December 3rd. Set up starts at 9am at MLK Civic Center Park, near the north side of the fountain. The park is adjacent to BHS. The women's team will arrive around 10 and the men's around noon. We expect to be done by 3pm. Come on down and support the Team! We'll see you there!

By the way, if you are wondering what all of this is about, check out this short video clip from the 2010 ergathon...

Here's another from 2009. Thanks, Mike!

2011 Erg-a-thon A Success!

After a sunny and brisk early morning practice on the estuary, the women's varsity and novice teams headed back to BHS Saturday morning to gather the erg machines and set up for the team's annual Ergathon fundraiser, held this year in downtown Berkeley. Parent volunteer Jim Clara had organized an efficient cadre of parents to raise the team canopies that shelter the team food and merchandise for sale.

"I am really impressed with how our Crew families stepped up to help stage this event. We had 20 people working the food table, merchandise, signage, delivering supplies, keeping an eye out for safety. Special thanks to Cindy Phillips-Romick for organizing the food table and John Godin, Jim Meador and Tres Fontaine worked the entire day until the last item was packed in the truck," he said.

Following the women, the men's varsity and novice teams arrived from practice a little after noon and did their part to keep the ergs humming.

Nearby were the tents that shelter the Occupy Berkeley movement, as well as farmers market and holiday craft fair canopies. All coexisted peacefully as the women's teams set up their ergs in a semicircle around the erstwhile fountain in Civic Center park, and started in on their erg pieces. Coxswains stood nearby shouting instructions, and teammates shouted encouragement as they huddled around the fountain awaiting their turn on the ergs. Parents and supporters drifted by, admired the mock-up of the latest BHS Crew Calendar (coming soon!), and tried not to get on their kids' nerves.

Don't forget to keep the Holiday Sprints on your calendar!  Come on down and cheer for both the current team and the BHS alumni rowers.  That'll be happening on Sunday, December 18th at JLAC.

Dec 21 story

One of the most vexing challenges in the battle against dengue virus, a mosquito-borne virus responsible for 50-100 million infections every year, is that getting infected once can put people at greater risk for a more severe infection down the road.
Now, for the first time, an international team of researchers that includes experts from the University of California, Berkeley, has pulled apart the mechanism behind changing dengue virus genetics and dynamics of host immunity, and they are reporting their findings in the Dec. 21 issue of Science Translational Medicine.
The virus that causes dengue disease is divided into four closely related serotypes (dengue virus 1, 2, 3 and 4), and those serotypes can be further divided into genetic variants, or subtypes.
The researchers showed that a person’s prior immune response to one serotype of dengue virus could influence the interaction with virus subtypes in a subsequent infection. How that interaction plays out could mean the difference between getting a mild fever and going into a fatal circulatory failure from dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome.
The findings have implications for the efforts to combat a disease that has grown dramatically in recent decades, including the development of a first-ever dengue vaccine.
According to the World Health Organization, dengue disease is now endemic in more than 100 countries around the world, and recent estimates say some 3 billion people – almost half of the world’s population – are at risk.
It was already known that upon a person’s first infection with dengue virus, the immune system reacts normally by creating antibodies to fight the viral invaders. The problem is that those antibodies can then be confused if confronted later with one of the other three types of dengue virus, and as this new study revealed, even different subtypes within the same serotype.

“With the second infection, the antibodies sort of recognize the new type of viruses, but not well enough to clear them from the system,” said study lead author Molly OhAinle, post-doctoral fellow in infectious diseases at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health. “Instead of neutralizing the viruses, the antibodies bind to them in a way that actually helps them invade the immune system’s other cells and spread.”
The study authors noted that this Trojan horse effect has been shown before, but the new research provides an analysis of the interplay between viral genetics and immune response with unprecedented detail, going beyond the main serotype.
Putting the puzzle pieces together required UC Berkeley’s expertise in immunology and virology, the genome analysis and biostatistical capabilities at the Broad Institute of Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the epidemiological and clinical field work at Nicaragua’s National Virology Laboratory.

Thank You letter writing coming January 29

This year's Ergathon turned out to be very successful, given the state of the economy. BHS Crew thanks everyone – family members, friends, colleagues and acquaintances – who gave a donation in support of our rowers..

Ergathon 'thank-you' letter writing will take place on Saturday, Jan 29th at BHS, in the library.

Ergathon organizers will provide a pre-printed thank you letter for each donor.  The letter will include donor's name and amount donated as well as our Tax ID, so this will serve as the tax receipt. Rowers will need to:
- personalize the thank you letter
- address and stamp the envelope
- make sure the correct letter goes in the correct envelope

Key things to know about the event:
- rowers should go directly to BHS after practice
- food will be provided
- rowers are encouraged to bring pre-printed address labels

Berkeley High Crew ERGATHON 2010!

Both the girls and boys crew teams recently made their presence known among the holiday shoppers at Fourth Street in Berkeley.  The Annual Ergathon was held on Saturday, December 4th.

The girls team got things going at about 9am, followed by the boys at about noon.  This event follows the team’s fall letter writing campaign.  If you’ve received your rower’s letter, please be generous and send in your donation, as this is the team’s most important fund-raising event of the year. If you didn’t receive a letter and would like to help, please use the “Donate” button. Thanks for your help!

The next time you can see the team in action will be at the Holiday Sprints at JLAC on December 19th.  Happy Holidays!

And for more fun….check out the video of the day’s event!

BHS Crew rowers write letters to family and friends to raise funds
This year's team showed up in numbers on the first Saturday of November to tackle the difficult task of asking for support.  Not that it was all bad.  But it's still hard to ask for money from family, friends and neighbors when, financially, times are tough.  Scholarship requests are at a record number this year and BHS Crew strives to include any student who has the desire to row.  Please do what you can to support the team.

The Ergathon itself takes place December 4, 2010 along Fourth Street in Berkeley.  Come on out to watch the young men and women at work on the stationary rowing machines called "ergs."  Then come on out to watch a regatta this spring at the Jack London Aquatic Center.  Keep an eye on this web site for all the details.
